People are bombarded every day with news about COVID-19.  They tend to focus on outbreaks and treatment but rarely mention nutrition and lifestyle.

Even worse, we are facing food shortages, supply line disruption and stay-at-home orders.

So, let us take a look at 5 facts we do know and best practices for the future.

Fact: We know this virus triggers an intense reaction from our immune system and sometimes a severe overreaction known as a cytokine storm.  This can lead to acute respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.

Fact: We know diets rich in antioxidants help strengthen the immune system.

Fact: We know adults 65 and older with comorbidities like obesity, diabetes, heart disease is at higher risk for hospitalization and death.

Fact: Lifestyle changes can improve or eliminate some chronic disease. 

Fact: Dietary surveys in the US and elsewhere show that most people are consuming diets that do not meet national guidelines.

COVID19 is a novel virus and treatments are emerging. There is no evidence that consuming a healthy diet alone can ward off COVID 19.  We have prevailed the first wave of this virus. Prepare yourself through healthy habits.  Now is a great time to boost your immune system and consider lifestyle changes like plant-based diets, exercise, and meditation.
